Matthew E. Hughes, Esq.

Mr. Hughes has been practicing law since 2006.  His approach to the practice of law is client-centered and he strives to make you feel comfortable and cared for as a person and strives to provide you with trusted counsel and advice.  Mr. Hughes began his legal career as an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps.  After separating from active duty he practiced at a District of Columbia-based civil litigation firm.

Mr. Hughes strives to settle all cases favorably out of court and allow you to obtain the best outcome by remaining in control of your case rather than allowing a judge to decide based on the limited information that is admissible in court.  Settlement also keeps your attorney fees down and reduces the likelihood of future litigation.  If a fair settlement is not possible, Mr. Hughes is prepared to advocate for you in court.  Since 2006, he has litigated an array of civil and criminal cases.

Mr. Hughes concentrates his family law practice on all aspects of family law including divorce, military divorce, support (both spousal and child), fashioning custody and parenting plans, equitable division of assets, and division of other marital assets including retirement benefits, IRA, 401(k), federal retirement benefits, and military retirement.  His goal is to assist clients and their families in resolving their legal conflicts to allow them to move forward in their lives, preserve their assets, their relationship with each other, and their children post-divorce.

Mr. Hughes concentrates his employment law practice in the areas of representing clients with discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims in the workplace.  He has litigated claims under Title VII, the ADEA, the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Whistleblower Protection Act, and other federal civil rights statutes.  Mr. Hughes regularly represents federal sector employees in claims before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and in appealable actions before the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB).  He has also represented federal employees and contractors in security clearance proceedings before the Defense Office of Hearings and Appeals.

Mr. Hughes earned his Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University School of Law and his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from California State University, Stanislaus.  He is a member of the state bars of Virginia, Maryland, and Utah (inactive).  He is also admitted to practice before the Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C.  He is a member of the employment and family law sections of the Maryland State Bar; the Bar Association of Montgomery County, MD; the Virginia State Bar; and the Fairfax Bar Association.  Issues related to veterans, children, and families concern him most.
